Happy Mother's Day!

We’re just a week away from your final project. You’re going to work with two other people to write a newspaper about Tom Robinson’s trial using Microsoft Publisher. Now I know what you’re thinking. “Mr. Womack, I don’t know how to use Microsoft Publisher!” Never fear! Today’s assignment will walk you through a short lesson that will explain all you need to know about the program.

Since Mother’s Day is just two days away, today you will create a Mother’s Day card using Microsoft Publisher. There are two reasons for this card. One, I know some of you didn’t get your moms anything for Mother’s Day. And two, you’ll know how to use the basics of Microsoft Publisher better and you’ll be ready to make a newspaper.

This card should be for anyone in your life that is like a mother to you. This is anyone who loves you, worries about you, and that you love. This person could be your mom, your grandma, an aunt, maybe even a friend’s mom who is just awesome! It’s up to you.

Now here is what you need to do:

1. Click on one of the links below to find some quotes about mothers. You can use one of these quotes if you want to make the card more personal.

2. Listen to the directions carefully. We’re going to go over the basics in class and I’ll give the directions out loud. Make sure you’re paying close attention.

3. Make sure you personalize all pages. There is even a place for your name on the back page.

4. Have fun. That’s what this assignment is really about.

Listen up my little Poet Laureates, it is time to get our hands a little dirty with poetry. By the time you read this you should have already written 5 of 6 types of poems. But just in case you skipped a step, let me explain from the beginning what you're required to do for this project.

1. Write and then type 5 of the 6 types of poems we discussed in class.
- Each poem needs a title (ex. Being Young and In Love).
- Each poem needs your name (ex Mike Womack).
- Each poem needs to include the type of poem it is (ex A Bio Poem).
- Each poem needs to be typed on a separate sheet of paper...one poem per page.

2. Type your original "Free Verse" peom you wrote last week.
- Follow the rules from step 1.

3. Type your "Poetry Is" and "My Life Is" poems that we wrote in class last week.
- Follow the rules from step 1.

4. Reseach one of the following poets:
- Write a 2 paragraph report about your poet.
- Include a short paragraph about why you chose this poet.
- Include 2 poems from the poet.
- After each poem, explain why you chose the poem
- This should be 3 total pages. 1 for the Bio of your poet. 1 for his/her first poem. 1 for his/her second poem.
- DO NOT COPY AND PAST BIOGRAPHY INFORMATION FROM THE WEB!!! Rewrite it in your own words.

Maya Angelou - Biography Some Poems

Gwendolyn Brooks - Biography Some Poems

Romeo and Juliet Final Project

Romeo and Juliet Final Project

Here’s the deal. We all know Romeo and Juliet got married in a rush. And they pretty much died in a rush, too. They were never able to enjoy the finer things in life. For example, they never enjoyed a beautiful wedding. They never celebrated a romantic honeymoon vacation. Poor Romeo and Juliet never got to have a proper burial.

Things are about to change.

For your final project in the Romeo and Juliet Unit, you will create for Romeo and Juliet what they should have had from the beginning. I want you to choose two of the following options to research, design, and present to the class.

A beautiful wedding for Romeo and Juliet
A romantic getaway honeymoon
A grand and somber funeral

After you decide which two projects you’d like to work on, begin researching ideas and materials. Below you will find specific information detailing a few rules that you MUST follow in order to achieve a satisfactory grade. Read carefully and plan accordingly. You have two days of in class planning and one day of final presentations this Friday. Any work that you do not complete in class will have to be completed on your own time. ASSIGNMENTS NOT COMPLETED AND PRESENTED BY FRIDAY WILL BE DEDUCTED 25% FOR EACH DAY OUTSTANDING!!! It is extremely important that you use your time wisely.

For all of the following, you are expected to record your work in an orderly presentation using a Word Document. Make sure you include a picture of every item necessary, prices, an order of events…whatever you feel is necessary to make your project stand out from the rest. I really want you to remember that this project is your FINAL project for the unit and is worth a total of 100 points. Give this your full attention and your best work. And please ask me if you have any questions along the way.

A Beautiful Wedding

You may spend up to $10,000 on your wedding but it must include the following:

1. A minister
2. Invitations
3. Number of people on the guest list
4. A church
5. Flowers for the church
6. Wedding apparel for all people participating in the ceremony
7. Music for the ceremony AND the dance after the dinner
8. Food for EVERYONE on the guest list
9. Drinks for EVERYONE on the guest list
10. A wedding cake

Every item on the list costs money. Research the web for the best deals on tuxedo rentals and a live band or a D.J. service for the dance. Make sure you select a dinner menu that will please everyone, but don’t forget to figure the cost of each meal times the number of people attending the ceremony…To make a long story short, everything for the wedding costs money. It is your job to create the best wedding you can with the money you’ve been given. Your grade will depend on how well you do your work, if you stayed within budget, and your presentation.

A Romantic Honeymoon

Send Romeo and Juliet on a honeymoon they will never forget! But you have to plan the whole trip on $5,000. Here is a list of items that you will need to plan for and spend money on to give these two star-crossed lovers the trip of a lifetime!

1. Where will they go for their honeymoon?
2. Airfare
3. Lodging for seven nights
4. Food for 14 meals for 2 people….28 total meals
5. Are they renting a car to get around or taking cabs?
6. Admissions costs for any amusement parts, theaters, zoos, movies…entertainment.
7. Any additional planning that might be necessary for an exciting week.

It is your job to create an agenda for the trip. You must plan each day’s activities, where the couple will eat every meal, how they will travel and where they will stay. When this assignment is complete I should be able to look at your agenda for the trip and know exactly what Romeo and Juliet will be doing during the week. Remember, your grade depends on how elaborate and well planned your vacation getaway actually is. Vacation wherever you think Romeo and Juliet would like to go. Research the web for the best deals.

A Very Appropriate Funeral

Poor Romeo and Juliet. They really never really got to know each other. Then they up and died. Your job is to plan a funeral for under $7,500. But don’t think you can get away with cremation or a cheap pine box for a casket! Romeo and Juliet were rich and lived in style! Make this an affordable but fancy funeral. Consider the following arrangements:

1. Which funeral home will be performing the ceremony?
2. What casket will they spend eternity in?
3. A beautiful headstone.
4. Flowers upon flowers to decorate their last hoorah!
5. Very fine clothes to be buried in.
6. Someone to play the organ or sing at the funeral.
7. Which songs will be played/sung?
8. Choose a cemetery and find out how much a plot will cost.

Don’t forget that you’re planning the burial for TWO people. While they can share some of the same services (music, headstones), they each need their own casket, flowers, cemetery plot, and other necessary items. You have the sole responsibility to send Romeo and Juliet out in style! Your grade is based on how well you spend your money, how beautiful the overall funeral is, and how believable your plan turns out.
